The best Big Country restaurants outside of Abilene

If there’s one thing Abilene and the Big Country don’t skimp on, it’s restaurants. Between Abilene itself and the surrounding towns of West Texas, you won’t run out of options for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in your hometown.

We went to the KEAN 105 Facebook page and asked a simple question. The result was 51 comments from all over the great country.

So whether you’re a longtime resident or just passing through, here are a few Big Country restaurants our listeners love that aren’t in Abilene.

Non-natives may be tempted to think that the smaller a town in the Abilene region, the fewer dining options available. Places like Stamford and Coleman, both of which appear multiple times on this list, prove otherwise and show that great food isn’t limited by geography.

As mentioned earlier, the restaurants on this list are hometown restaurants – no burger or chicken chains here!

Part of the charm that comes with the great outdoors in the Big Country is knowing that you’ll find home-style Texan hospitality wherever you go. Supporting small businesses and hometown establishments is a great way to repay that hospitality when you travel.

Abilenians looking for a change of scenery may also find use in this list. Most of the restaurants on the above list are a short drive from Abilene (perfect for a Friday or Saturday night), and others make an even better day trip.

My personal recommendation on this list is the Runaway Train Cafe in Brownwood if you love burgers and fries and appreciate restored trains. Their BLT sandwich is also suitable for lighter meals.

Think of this list as a list of things to do outside of Abilene and let me know if I missed any of your favorites.
