BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Days before Hokie Homecoming, students at the Virginia Tech campus woke up on Thursday to some startling news.

According to Virginia Tech, fewer students will be allowed to attend upcoming home football games – including the game on Saturday, Oct. 16 – due to their behavior in the stands.

The university said in a statement on Thursday, October 14 that the students had been “selfish, inappropriate and embarrassing” in recent home games.

“I think a lot of people got fake tickets or sneaked in, and we got pushed around,” said Sarah Cobb, a freshman at Virginia Tech. “There were hundreds of people on the stairs and people were falling down the stairs. “

School officials announced that students must either pay up front to buy season tickets or get lucky and win their places in the lottery. In addition to this, students who go to the game will have to comply with various protocols.

Since the reunion takes place on Saturday, some students say the new rule comes at a bad time.

“I understand and I know there is a lot of fraud. But it sucks because it’s the most important thing we do all year round, especially the home game. I didn’t get a ticket so I’ll just be home, ”said Sarah Kimperda, sophomore at Virginia Tech.

However, other students, like freshman Jordan Best, say the new policy makes sense.

“I kind of understand the process, mainly because of the season ticket prices,” Best explained. “It’s a bit unfair for them that students can enter for free. ”

Still, university officials are defending their decision, saying the changes are aimed at allowing everyone to enjoy the game.

“We all need to step up and take personal responsibility for the fan experience at Lane Stadium, which is so important, to cheer on the Hokies, but also for the safety and well-being of all the fans around you,” said said Virginia Tech. spokesperson Mark Owczarski.
