Medina joins SGMC Infectious Disease
VALDOSTA – Dr. Rita Medina, MD, Infectious Diseases, has joined the South Georgia Medical Center Infectious Disease.
SGMC infectious diseases are part of the SGMC physician network, hospital officials said in a statement.
Medina comes to Valdosta from Flagstaff, Arizona, where she practiced as an infectious disease physician at Flagstaff Medical Center. She received her medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Medina completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Houston Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas, and she completed her Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill.
She said patients can expect her to listen to their concerns and not dismiss them. She wants her patients to be involved and participate in their care.
âTo this end, it is very important to me that patients are well aware of their condition, including its pathophysiology and what is being done about it. Because it is important to me, I make a point of explaining things to my patients as fully as possible, however many times I have to see them. I think as patients understand more about what is going on with their health, they become better advocates for themselves, âsaid Medina.
She specializes in diseases caused by a wide variety of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites, hospital officials said. She treats pneumonia, skin and bone infections and is also trained to recognize and treat tuberculosis and HIV as well as zoonotic diseases and invasive fungal infections, among others.
Medina is certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and is fluent in Spanish.
Medina can’t wait to move to Valdosta as the city reminds her of where she grew up.
âWhen I visited South Georgia, the greenery, weather and ocean nearby in Florida reminded me a lot of Puerto Rico – the weather and the landscapes I grew up in made me feel like I was in house, âMedina said.
In her spare time, she said she enjoyed reading fiction, hiking, baking, and writing.
Medina accepts new patients. To make an appointment, call (229) 433-1838. SGMC Infectious Disease is located at 2412 N. Oak St., Suite B1.
