Chandigarh, March 31
After a lull due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the political scene is expected to heat up in Haryana ahead of the upcoming municipal elections, which are expected to be held in April/May this year.
While the BJP-JJP and AAP will contest the elections of 41 municipal corporations, municipal councils and municipal committees over party symbols, the main opposition, the Congress, will only contest the elections of municipal corporations over the party symbol. The Congress has not yet taken a call on the fight against the elections of municipal councils and municipal committees on the party symbol.
OP Dhankar, chairman of the state BJP, said the party had already taken the lead in preparations for the polls with a series of meetings of its front organizations held across the state. “We are fully prepared for the crucial MC poll as the timing is announced by the State Election Commission,” Dhankar said.
Former chief minister and opposition leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has claimed that the people are ready to teach the coalition government a lesson because of its anti-people policy. “The MC poll results will mark the beginning of the end for coalition government ahead of the 2024 Assembly elections,” Hooda said.
However, observers felt that after its resounding success in Punjab, the AAP’s foray into the electoral arena on the party symbol would be closely watched by the party leader and the chief minister’s home state. of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal.
Sushil Gupta, a member of Rajya Sabha and leader of AAP Haryana, had previously stated publicly that the party would fight MC elections over its own party symbol. In fact, the AAP had already announced observers for 31 municipal bodies to prepare party cadres for the polls.
